According to science, head banging to heavy metal is great for our brains.
New York based clinical psychologist and therapist Dr Nicole Andreoli, Ph.D, has gone viral after posting to TikTok which explains the positive effects that heavy metal has on our brains and mental health.
In her video, Dr Andreoli explains how listening to metal helps us think more logically and become more relaxed.
Dr Andreoli’s video came in response to another TikTok video where a user asked the question about why the in your face genre made her feel at “total piece” while she performed her daily duties.

In her explanation, Dr Andreoli says the this “makes total sense” because of how therapeutic music in general can be.
She goes on to explain that, “Heavy metal has been found to lessen negative emotions by reducing cortisol levels, which helps to lessen stress. Research has found that people who listen to heavy metal tend to think more logically and in more complex terms than those who don’t listen to heavy metal. Heavy metal has been found to help the most with focus.”

“Now, lyrics in heavy metal do tend to focus on rage. But there is no research linking listening to heavy metal with a desensitisation to violence. … Listening to heavy metal has been found to be a positive way to process anger safely.”
