Whyalla City Council has announced some upgrades are on the way for Cuttlefest 2024.

The much-needed works are hoped to temporarily fix issues at the Point Lowly dive site until a second round of permanent future-proof works can be completed.

Whyalla Mayor Phill Stone says it was a big 2023 season, and they are expecting the same again for season 2024.

“The figures have come back, last year in the four months of the Cuttlefish season, more people visited that part of Point Lowly and the area than the whole northern coast… for the whole year,” Mayor Stone says.

He explains the works will be split into two stages.

“What we’ve come up with is a two stage strategy – one is short term, to be in place for this year, and the other is to look further ahead… because we are going to need more facilities.”

In the next few months to handle the increasing number of visitors, stage one of works will include new showers and changerooms, as well as roadworks to mitigate traffic.

“If we didn’t do this work before this season, there was every likelihood we would have to limit the numbers of people going in.”
