Hooded plovers are back on our shores in promising numbers.
The return of the threatened bird species has been achieved with the Hooded Plover Project run by Glenelg Hopkins CMA in partnership with the Eyre Peninsula Landscape Board and funded through the Australian Government’s National Landcare Program.
Across the state, 280 chicks fledged – compared to 47 fledged over the same time period prior to monitoring – and there was a 70 per cent increase in chick survival rates during the project.

The organisations involved say their greatest supporters were the volunteers who monitored and protected the hoodies.
They’re now reminding locals to look out for the little birds and keep dogs, beach games and vehicles away from their nests.
