The review into the closure of Whyalla’s birthing services has determined the cause of the midwife shortage was a strained relationship between midwives and executives, outdated facilities and a lack of work incentives.
Eight recommendations have been provided to address the issues, all of which have been accepted by the Flinders and Upper North Local Health Network.
Steps are now being taken to address these concerns, including relocating the birthing unit and recruiting a Senior Midwifery Leader.

The goal is to reinstate birthing services as soon as possible, focusing on improved facilities and workforce support.
