Alcohol-related anti-social behaviour has prompted a proposal for a city-wide dry zone in Whyalla.

It comes after a rise of complaints in anti-social behaviour, particularly in the areas surrounding McDouall Stuart Avenue, which is just outside the current dry zone.

The council’s recommendation was passed at the Whyalla City Council meeting on February 17, and involves commencing the statutory consultation process which includes community engagement and discussions with relevant stakeholders.

A letter will also be sent to the Minister of Business and Consumer Affairs to explore the possibility of a minor variation to the existing dry zone boundary as an interim measure.

If implemented, the proposal would allow police to confiscate alcohol in all public places, including beaches, reserves and shopping centres.

Public consultation on the proposal is expected to begin in the coming months.
