Another setback for the steelworks…

Australia’s largest rail freight operator, Aurizon, has suspended some services for GFG Alliance due to unpaid debts.

Aurizon is responsible for transporting iron ore from GFG’s mining operations in the Middleback Ranges to Whyalla, where the ore is processed and exported.

A spokesperson for Aurizon cited “unresolved contractual issues” as the reason for the service halt and confirmed they are evaluating the impact on staff.

While GFG’s mining operations remain profitable, the steelworks has faced financial difficulties, with its coal-fired blast furnace offline for nearly six months this year.

In response, GFG Alliance says they’re working with suppliers to navigate the industry’s current challenges.
