Backpacker licensing impacting local industries

Interstate and overseas workers are integral to the EP’s agriculture, aquaculture and horticulture industries, but they’re being held back by red tape.

Employees with a South Australian licence can apply for a restricted licence to operate tractors and farm machinery, but interstate and overseas employees cannot.

Member for Flinders Sam Telfer has urged the state government to accommodate these workers so our local industries aren’t left in the lurch.

“I’ve written to both Minister Koutsantonis – who’s the Minister responsible – but also Minister Scriven, who’s the Regional and Primary Industries Minister, because this is a gap which I worry is going to mean that the potential impact on us as regional business operators is significant, Mr Telfer says.

“We need to have an arrangement in place so these workers that do come in from interstate and overseas can actually do the important work that is necessary, and do so in a way which is actually following the rules.”
