Those who didn’t make it to Cuttlefest will have to wait until next year, as the 2023 season has come to an end.
From May to August, the event brought more than 10,000 people to Whyalla to enjoy the return of the cuttlefish to Spencer Gulf waters.
Tourists and locals enjoyed the spectacle with snorkeling, diving and glass-bottom boat tours, alongside land events like the Under the Sea Markets and the Salty Sea’esta Twilight event.
Not only did people show up in hordes, but it’s also estimated more than 100,000 cuttlefish visited Point Lowly for their annual spawning aggregation.
Whyalla Mayor Phill Stone says Cuttlefest was great for the local economy as visitors would extend their stays to participate in the host of events on offer.
He also says this year’s Cuttlefest highlights the great work done to protect the cuttlefish, allowing their numbers to rebound from their record low ten years ago.
