Whyalla midwife shortage forces expecting parents to give birth elsewhere

A critical midwifery shortage has caused the suspension of birthing services at Whyalla Hospital, effective as of Monday, 26 June.

Flinders and Upper North Local Health Network CEO Craig Packard says staff are working with women who were due to give birth at the hospital to arrange alternative locations.

Despite the birthing hold, antenatal and post-natal care services remain available at the hospital, and maternal emergencies will be received.

Mr Packard says they want to reinstate birthing services as soon as possible, and are in the recruitment process for qualified staff.

The ABC reports the Australian Nursing and Midwifery Federation SA estimate South Australia will be short 15,000 nurses and midwives by 2025.
